Part 2: Grammar in Context Questions 31–60

Read the text and choose the correct option directly in each gap.

Traditional and Flexible Working

For many years, office work followed a familiar pattern. Most employees (31) from Monday to Friday and spent most of their day (32) the office. Meetings (33) in meeting rooms, and many questions (34) by walking to a colleague’s desk.

Today, this model is changing. Many employees work from home once or twice a week, while others have flexible hours. This can be useful for people (35) have long journeys to work. Some say they are more productive when they (36) organise part of their own day. It can also make it easier (37) work and private life, especially when skilled employees are (38) to find.

However, flexibility does not solve every problem. If colleagues are rarely in the same place, communication (39) more difficult. New employees may not learn as quickly (40) they would in the office. For this reason, companies need simple rules. Everyone should know which days (41) in the office and how quickly messages need (42) .

Managers also need to trust their teams. Results are usually more important (43) time spent at a desk. A flexible system works best when goals (44) clearly and progress is discussed regularly. Employees also need confidence that they (45) simply because they work from home.

Writing becomes more important too. A short message is helpful if it (46) clearly, but a sentence that is grammatically correct may still sound too direct. “Send me the file today” may sound less polite (47) “Could you send me the file today?” In international teams, people may understand the words but not always know which phrase (48) natural.

The office will probably not disappear. It may become the place (49) people meet for discussions, training and social contact. This is especially important for new employees, who need time to become (50) with company routines. The strongest companies will be those (51) combine flexibility with clear communication.

A system that looks efficient on paper may fail if it (52) properly. Before changing its working model, a company should consider not only what employees want, (53) what customers and teams need. If flexible arrangements (54) too quickly, they can create confusion; if they are reviewed regularly, problems can be solved before they (55) serious.

In many organisations, the real issue is not where people work, but how decisions (56) and how responsibility is shared. A policy that is clear enough for managers may still be difficult for employees (57) . For this reason, flexible working should be treated as an ongoing process (58) a one-time change. Used well, it can be just as (59) as traditional office work and sometimes even (60) effective.
